CHAPTER NEWS

A new program, AHS Audience Development Assistance Project (ADAP) has been developed to give performance experience to current AHS National Competition winners.

Local Chapters may request financial support of up to $300 for assistance in presenting competition winners who reside within that chapter’s region.
Current winners residing in the Northwestern Region are:
Angela Dastrup, First Prize, Intermediate II Division
Elizabeth Ann White, Third Prize, Intermediate I Division
If your chapter would like to arrange for a recital by one of these talented harpists, please contact the ADAP Chairman for an application form and further details about the project.

The Greater Seattle Chapter has an extensive newsletter. To receive a copy go to www.harpspectrum.org. Chapter activities have been many and varied. From September to November Programs included a recital by Dan Yu, 1st Place winner of the USA International Competition, John Carrington with tales from his world tour on the QE2, Etiquette and Internship and Profession of the Music Practitioner – contact cglenna1@aol.com, a recital by Royal Harpist Catrin Finch, Seattle Folk Harp Symposium – www.dustystrings.com, Teachers’ Workshopharp4u@worldnet.att.net. There were eight pages of interesting articles and events. Thanks to Joyce Rice, Editor, and Susi Hussong, Portland Chapter (Marion Fouse).

Alaska: Ann Cullen attended the AHS Conference in St. Paul and found the Anne Adams Auditions very exciting. Karen Almquist attended the World Harp Congress in Geneva, Switzerland, and reported enthusiastically on the concerts and new inspiring ideas. Jenny Lindner wrote about the Fairbanks (Alaska) Summer Arts Festival which she attended as a guest artist and faculty member. There were three faculty harpists: Jaren Spor Peterlin, Sue Richards and Jenny. There were 40 harp registrants ages eight to adult taking seven harp classes. 34 harpists and harpers performed in groups and together on the final concert. The 2003 Fairbanks Summer Festival begins on July 13. For information go to the website www.fsaf.org.

From Longview, Washington, Colette Jones writes: Two inspiring performances of Mass for a New Millenium by Dr. Richard Nance were given in May 2002. The Mass was also performed at the World Harp Congress on July 26 in Geneva, Switzerland. Beth Wooster was the harpist. Colette has been asked to perform the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto.

From Salt Lake City, Utah.
During the Utah State Fair, 35 harpists competed in a “developmental” competition. Teachers, parents and students joined to make it as fair and relaxed as possible. Tamara Oswald, Jenny Lindner and Marion Fouse were the judges. Results were as follows:

ELEMENTARY DIVISION: Elizabeth White, 1st Place, Lauren Wertz, 2nd Place
Jessica Hart and Marina Wertz, Honorable Mention
JUNIOR DIVISION: Hannah Watkins, 1st Place, Mallory Wahlstrom, 2nd Place,
Brittany Hart, 3rd Place
Rachel Burnham and Kathryn Zurcher, Honorable Mention

Two students were winners in the Lily Laskine Competition in Deauville, France
SENIOR DIVISION: Angela Dastrup, 3rd Place
JUNIOR DIVISION: Elizabeth White, Honorable Mention
Angela Dastrup stayed in France for a month and studied with Catherine Michel.

100 Suzuki harp students participated in a November concert in the Utah State Capitol Rotunda for a special concert with string quartet and handbell choir dedicated to harp student, Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted from her home last June. There is still no trace of her. A special Christmas tree for Elizabeth, currently displayed at Lyon & Healy West, will be moved to the Festival of the Trees which benefits the Primary Children’s Hospital. Anyone wishing to donate a tree decoration or money to the Primary Children’s Hospital in her name should contact Margaret Wahlstrom at 801-544-0747.

Future concerts are now being finalized but look for the following artists:
January 17-19 – Sylvia Woods workshop and concert
February 22 – Xavier de Maistre
March 5 – Harps in Motion, BYU DeJong Concert Hall Stage, multiple harps, dancers & special staging
March 7 – Visiting artist, either Alice Giles or Jane Yoon.

Plan to attend the Summer Institute at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City July 21-26. There will be something for everyone including the Anne Adams Awards Auditions and the 15th National Competition along with concerts, workshops and classes. A complete Schedule of Events, Registration Form and General Information will be sent to all AHS members early in 2003.

Send your harp notes for the Spring newsletter by March 1st to ShruDeLi Ownbey, 535 2nd Avenue, Salt Lake City UT 84103 – Phone 801-359-8051 or E-mail: ShruDeLi @lyonhealy.com
